Nirmala Vidyalaya takes its name from Ms Ruth Nirmala Gnanakan, the late sister of Dr Ken and Dr Ricky Gnanakan. She passed away over 10 years ago, and had committed her life to education.

At present, there are two Nirmala Vidyalas in Bangalore. One is in a slum called Rajendranagar, which is close to Koramangala, one of Bangalore's busiest suburbs. The newest Nirmala Vidyala is in a fast-growing village called Rayansandra, which is the direction of Electronics City, Bangalore's IT hub.

Both schools are Kannada-English medium SSLC schools and ensure children from poorer families have access to quality education. Emphasis is being placed on the students learning English and other important life skills. There are alway opportunities to volunteer at these schools.
